Best Game of the Year 2000 - Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (c) Interplay

Honourable Mention - Deus Ex, The Sims, No One Lives Forever

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is a mythic saga continuing the much-loved Baldur's Gate storyline. The Forgotten Realms adventure ensues along the southern portion of the Sword Coast in the merchant kingdom known as Amn. The borders of this region include such diverse environments as the Elven forests of Tethir, the Cloudpeak Mountains, The Drow cities of the Underdark, and the Capitol City of Amn, Athkatla.

Here's a quote from our review of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn:

All and all, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is an impressive game. Like Baldur's Gate I, you will spend hours upon hours playing it. I'm not exactly sure what Black Isle has for an expected gaming time, but I'd assume it's at least more than BG1 (over 150 hours). RPG's can be somewhat short these days, but this doesn't look like it's anything close to short. If you liked the original, then I don't see any reason why you won't like Shadows of Amn more. This ain't your dad's (for all you post Win95 gamers) AD&D computer game, but that doesn't mean this game is anything but a classic.
