Another puzzle game has arrived at my door. This one reminds
me of the classic board game ‘Connect Four’. The object of
the game is to get all of the appropriate colored balls down
into the end of the pipes, meanwhile your opponent can use
his balls to knock yours down to the bottom and vice versa.
Problems arises when you can’t put two balls on top of one
another, they just slide to the next pipe. When the balls hit the
tab, it switches the stopper to the other side causing a mass
downflux of balls. Sound complicated? It’s not really once you
play a few games.
It seems set in a time when my grandfather was a "youngin". It
gives you the look and feel of an old game which everybody
gathered around on a Saturday night to play. It is a well
thought out game in which you must plan your every move.
You must match wits against the computer or against up to 3
friends. One downside is that this is the only game that comes
with it, its not a set of a few games to spend your time figuring
out.
Graphics/Animation:
Puzzle games aren't usually noted for their graphics. This one
is quite poor. This game reminds me of one of those
shareware games I downloaded from a BBS a long time ago.
It does have nice colors and a nostaligic theme to it, each
screen has little things that at least make the screen enjoyable
to look at. The animation sequences remind me of Cubic
Player's Wurfel mode, all blocky with smooth animation, but
what’s the use when a table looks like a massive brown blob.
The intro wasn’t too much to look at either as it sets the mood
with old ragtime music.
Sound/Music:
This game reminds me of my old 386 with my 5 watt PC
Squeeker. It simply has not stepped into the age of digitally
sampled sounds from real life props and such. The plinks of
the switch/stops get rather annoying after a while. Despite that
there is music, only one song yet music just the same. I do
believe it is Mars: The Bringer of War by Holst. It makes for an
interesting gaming experience. It at least drowns out the
plinks. Each time a ball goes through the bottom it makes a
organ pipe sound, makes sense, since each pipe does look like
an organ pipe.
GamePlay:
This game is quite easy to learn yet very hard to master. It
takes a lot of logic. It is by far one of the best logic games I
have seen in a while. You have to plan each move and think
of what your opponent (computer or human) will do to
counteract your move. This game is definitely one of the more
exhilarating logic games. It goes along in the category of
Full-Contact Oragami.
Multiplayer:
This game is the epitome of multiplayer. Its no fun playing the
computer over and over, its like playing tic-tac-toe with it
except you actually win a few times. The best part of this
game is that you can get a group of 4 people together and play
it and all play each other. A good brain game if you ask me.
Overall Impression:
This game is definitely not for the action gamers, nor is it for
those adventure/rpg people. This is for those people who
enjoy a good puzzle they can play while at work or with a few
friends. Logic games aren't known for their graphics or their
sounds, its all gameplay and replay value. This is one game
which does just that. It makes you think while at least having
some eye and ear candy for the mind.
