Arguably, Quake has been the one franchise of id’s titles that constantly pushed the conceptual envelope. It abandoned its initial storyline of fighting the evil “Quake” with a more definitive opponent – the evil Strogg.

Quake 4 delivers an enjoyable single player game. Kane and the battle against the Strogg are handled nicely, and there's enough direction placed in the story to accurately host an expansion pack (which you can probably bet will be on its way next year). Hopefully they'll explore much more of the character twists and the rest of the Rhino Squad. On the other hand, you're much better off firing up a copy of Quake 3 Arena if you want to get your multiplayer on, since Quake 4 really steps backward in the online arena.

What we said about it:

Rarely does a game come along that makes you want to plunge headfirst back into a challenge this difficult a year after you have defeated it, and then keep you in a sweaty, pacing state of panic as you attempt it.

Ninja Gaiden: Black is an improvement on a masterpiece. It is the defining title of this console generation and one that every gamer owes to themselves to play, even when considering the frustrating difficulty levels. Do yourself a favor and find both the skills and thirty bucks to buy this title. It will go down in gaming history as a classic that defined its generation.

Get Ninja Gaiden: Black: Xbox

 

What we said about it:

Visually, the game hasn't changed at all. It still looks great, especially the killer weather effects. The snowy mountain levels bring with it a steady snowfall, and the Badlands Fortress level, which takes place in a desert canyon, rages with blinding sandstorms. There is a noticeable absence of cutscenes, but I guess that's a product of this title being an expansion rather than a full-on sequel.

When Rahil and his army have been thwarted and the campaign comes to a close, one thing is for certain, Summit Strike is good value for your money. At $29.99 USD, almost half the cost of Ghost Recon 2, Summit Strike offers a new 11-mission campaign, 24 multiplayer maps, 24 multiplayer game types, and a handful of new weapons and multiplayer skins. What more could you ask for? So despite the shaky friendly AI, the Ghost Recon series continues to be one of the best squad-based shooters available for the Xbox. If you're at all a fan, you're doing yourself a disservice by not enrolling in the Ghost's latest campaign.
