Sprint PCS MM-A700 Multimedia Phone
Sprint PCS / Samsung

Overall, Sprint’s MM-A700 is a stand up phone. We still haven’t covered the voice quality and reception, which were both great – even when roaming outside of Sprint’s network. The phone and the service definitely deserve the multimedia moniker. We particularly liked the camera and camcorder duo. The phone is also heavily disposed to displaying graphics and games. However, the streaming video leaves something to be desired. In its infant stage now, only true enthusiasts and gadget lovers will live with the quality and performance. But even with that drawback, there’s still a lot of multimedia left to be enjoyed here.

Linksys Wireless Music Player
Linksys

All said, the Linksys Wireless-B Music System is a very interesting device. It is not, sadly, a killer app; but it has its merits. For me, the true turnoff is the fact that it won’t play my raw, unadulterated MP3s from my Windows file share server. If you are willing to look beyond that, then the functionality it offers is quite nice, especially if you happen to enjoy listening to Internet radio and so forth. There is enough flexibility to satisfy a variety of users, and if the display was better, it would be an even better device to impress someone for Christmas.

Where is it now?

Sprint’s Samsung MM-A700 is an interesting phone that shows a glimpse of what can be done with 3G networks. A dual/tri-band phone, from the moment it starts up, it plays off a chime to let you know that picture and sound is what this phone is all about. With a built in camera, camcorder, support for streaming media, e-mail, scheduling, wireless web and the works, it’s got some of the best features that you expect from GSM networks but this flip phone is in a CDMA package.

Where is it now?

Media players are all the rage these days and it’s hard to find a networking company that hasn’t made some sort of media player that accesses songs, photos or videos on your PC. This product is a little more novel in that it is standalone and doesn’t require you to pair it up with existing A/V equipment. As it stands, the Linksys Wireless-B Music System is geared a little bit more towards early adopters than a mainstream audience that simply must have their MP3s follow them, no matter the hurdles to overcome. For those, it is a perfect device.

HP Media Center m1180N
Hewlett Packard

With the release of Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition 2005 (MCE 2005), HP, one of the initial supporters of the platform, rolls out the next HP Media Center m1180n. A credible computer on its own, this product uses a Pentium 4 550 (3.4Ghz) processor, with 1 GB PC3200 RAM installed, a 250 GB SATA hard disk, an 8x DVD+RW, a DVD ROM, ATI Radeon X300SE and a built in TV tuner to handle recording of television programs. Most of the time, hardware enthusiasts find little to like in brand name systems because of shoddy choice of parts or underpowered components. With this retinue at its command, the HP Media Center m1180n will be appreciated even by that hard to please crowd.

Actiontec Wireless Digital Media Player
Actiontec

On paper, Actiontec’s Wireless Digital Media Player appears no different than other products before it from competitors like SMC, Prismiq, Linksys and the many competitors that are sure to follow. One thing makes the Actiontec product stand out: it works – even wirelessly. The silver and svelte looking Wireless Digital Media Player comes with an Actiontec 802.11b PCMCIA card that can hook on to any Wi-Fi network and deliver audio, video as well as digital photos to any television screen.

Where is it now?

Initially, MCE devices were meant for niche markets like enthusiasts, dorm room students who can benefit from a television/computer combination and bachelors who don’t have more than one television in their homes. This isn’t true anymore. The HP Media Center m1180n is more PC looking than the newest HP media center devices (like HP’s Z540 or Z545B) but it is quiet enough not to be noticed in a living room. As a media hub, we can see this fitting into a family home without any caveats or reservations. That this product is also a powerful PC workstation is a bonus.

Where is it now?

The Actiontec Wireless Digital Media Player was a pleasant surprise. After trying prominent competitors like Linksys and Prismiq, we were expecting the same spotty wireless connections and setup hassles. With the Actiontec product, we found none of those. The biggest oversight is the remote control, the need to use the stop button to exit any media (rather than back, or home buttons) and Actiontec’s cryptic use of the message invalid. Otherwise, this is a great inaugural release for Actiontec.

Kingston DataTraveler Elite
Kingston Technology

Using the USB 2.0 interface, the DataTraveler Elite promises read speeds of 24MB/sec and write speeds at 14MB/sec. A 450MB binary file took approximately one minute to write. Reading the same file back to the hard disk took forty-five seconds. Although these claims are far from today’s speediest hard drives, it’s still respectable enough and it makes the difference between using the DataTraveler Elite as a storage device to shuttle files between computers or working directly off the device itself.

Asante FriendlyNET FR1104-G Router
Asante

Last year we covered the predecessor of this product, Asante’s FriendlyNET FR1104-G, and came away thrilled with its comprehensive security functions, solid routing capabilities and wireless connectivity. This year we look at the updated model, the FR1104-G, which brings 802.11G connectivity to the table and strengthens the security aspects of the router, particularly with the wireless portion.

Where is it now?

The DataTraveler Elite expands on the original USB memory key by Kingston Technology. Known for their cutting edge memory products, Kingston’s original DataTraveler was a solid memory device with built-in software to protect itself; hence the travel in the name of the product. The Elite series is aimed at corporate and IT power users who demand top performance and security.

Where is it now?

Ultimately, it’s the enthusiasts and power users who will come to appreciate the FR1104-G the most. It provides a lot of functionality, particularly with filters and security options that are normally associated with small/medium business products. A two year support and warranty accompanies the product. Don’t be mistaken by the four port device. It may sound like a starter product. But we can easily see the FR1104-G, with its many features, becoming the cornerstone of any consumer and SOHO network.

Its use of 2.4 GHz wireless technology ensures a clear crisp voice at all times, without any interference or delays. The adjustable noise canceling microphone blocks out any unwanted shrieks and gasps from backseat Halo 2 drivers nearby, which is a blessing to your opponents. A quickly adjustable volume button is conveniently located on the earpiece, and giving a tap of the power button also mutes the microphone. Logitech Cordless Controllers
Logitech

Whether you have an Xbox or a PlayStation 2, these Logitech cordless controllers set the bar for wireless. Both are roughly exactly the size of the controller they are meant to replace and button placement is identical. Utilizing frequency hopping 2.4 GHz cordless technology, they will never interfere with other devices; say your cordless phone, or wireless network. Both feature vibration, which can be toggled on and off with a button press - Wavebirds these are not. With around 30 feet of range, you can effortlessly move around your game room and still maintain the connection. As an added bonus, batteries are included, so once you open the box, you are ready to go.

Sony PlayStation PStwo
Sony Computer Entertainment

I swear, SCEA must have invented a shrink-ray machine to pack all this power into such a sexy and sleek new form factor. The newly redesigned PStwo is a must-buy for anyone who has a few extra bucks lying around. The moment I unpacked this beauty, I was in love. Thanks to a built-in infrared panel for complete remote control, you can pretty much kick your old DVD player to the curb. Also kiss your bulky network adaptor goodbye; the PStwo has it built right in. Only slightly larger than a game case itself, the PStwo is 2004?s new Jared from Subway. If only the Xbox could go on such a diet, too.

Where is it now?

No wires are a real spectacle to behold, and once you have outfitted your entire game room to be wireless, you will thank yourself for spending that little extra bit of money. Ever since these beauties got connected to my console, they have yet to be unplugged.

Where is it now?

The only major buzzkill for the PStwo is for the Final Fantasy XI players. Since the PStwo doesn?t have any internal storage bays, the Hard Disk junkies are out of luck right now. Sony hasn?t announced any solutions to this problem yet, but they haven?t let us down in the past, so chances are this problem will be rectified. Also be sure to buy a new four-player multitap and vertical stand, as previous versions are not compatible.

Thrustmaster Wireless Dual Trigger Gamepad
Thrustmaster

The first thing that occurred to me when I picked it up was that it was kind of heavy, but it’s not excessively so; unless you’re Mr. Burns, you should be right well off. The gamepad is made of a two-tone black and blue plastic which is a nice design touch. It feels overall bigger and fuller than a Playstation 2 DualShock controller.
The controller has the standard set of 4 buttons on the right, a D-pad on the left, two analogue sticks and 4 index finger trigger buttons. In addition, it has two actual triggers which are configurable to replicate any button or axis – in proportional mode, which is very cool.

Fossil Wrist Net Smart Watches
Fossil

Once upon a time, the coolest watch in the world was solely in the possession of Dick Tracy for his crimefighting adventures. With his trusty two way communicator, he could speak to Tess Trueheart, Chief Brandon and his other associates. But what if we moved our hero from the 1930s into the modern era, replete with the Internet, email and other information at the touch of your fingertips? He might just be packing a WristNet Smart Watch from Fossil, powered by MSN Direct.

Where is it now?

Thrustmaster has always been a name to be reckoned with in the controller business, so anything coming from them is always worth a look. If you are buying a new Playstation 2 for the holidays, then you should consider this as a possible alternative to a DualShock. If you have a big room with a huge TV, you almost certainly need this, because you need to move away from the screen.

Where is it now?

A radical improvement over the initial design of the SPOT device, Fossil?s Wrist Net Smart Watch does provide enough personalized content to make the concept of the device a great choice for any gadget addict or style fiend in your family that wants to constantly be kept abreast of what?s going on in the world.
