When Sony talked up its PSP with high quality graphics, sound and sleak new UMD memory, it was not one of those whiz bang action games that stole the hearts of PSP owners but rather a simple looking puzzle game called Lumines. Gameloft is now bringing Lumines to mobile handsets hoping to cash in on the halo around Lumines.

At its core, Lumines is similar to Tetris in that blocks drop down and you have to match them up to form four matching colored blocks together. Unmatched blocks will accumulate eventually leading to the dreaded game over screen. A sweeping timeline passes through depending on the rhythm of the music which removes the blocks marked when you stack them correctly together. This is the genius of Lumines as it allows mixing of musical rhythm and the unlocking of new skins that gives Lumines its unique challenge.

Unfortunately, I just didn't get the part about the musical element. The soundtracks on Lumines Mobile are on the weak side and when you're playing the game in public, you'll probably have it turned off anyway. At the very least, Lumines Mobile does not cripple the game like its Xbox 360 cousin did with micropayment downloads for additional skins.

Gameloft has introduced a new Arcade game mode and some ‘one on one' action with a computer player but otherwise has kept the formula to how it was on the PSP. It's a good puzzle game and a different twist on the usual Tetris clone bunch but the lack of credible audio takes away from the Lumines experience.
