With dual screens, Nintendo not only rolled out their new conception of a handheld gaming device, they showed off some games that take advantage of the technology.
Metroid: Prime Hunters
In Metroid: Prime Hunters, the 2D screen is devoted to an automap while the 3D screen displays a full first person shooter. To improve aiming, the stylus is used to shoot, aim and rotate the camera. It took some time getting used to this but people who have played first person shooters on PDAs should pick it up in no time. It would be nice to let gamers try the old fashioned way too. The E3 version supported four player multiplayer gaming.
PictoChat
PictoChat allows owners of the Nintendo DS to exchange text and picture messages with each other. The interface looks very much like an IM application on the PC. A virtual keyboard is displayed so you can tap your messages in.
WarioWare
WarioWare uses one screen for Wario and one for the minigames. Wario basically throws a minigame that will land on the other screen. You then have to solve the problem posed within a certain time limit. One challenge posed involved writing oriental characters as shown on screen. Another challenge involved using the stylus as a magic eraser to erase an image on screen. Sometimes fish would come up and you would have to drag a net around to collect all of them.
DS Pikachu
This is more of a tech demo than a full fledged game but it should do well if it is expanded into a full Pokemon title. You can use the stylus and touch screen to interact with Pikachu directly. For example, you can pull at Pikachu’s cheek and see the actual reaction to that on screen and aurally as well.
