Have you ever wondered what would happen if you put Serious Sam in a blender, mixed in an even better graphics engine with surreal physics, hit purée, and then sprinkled some death metal music on top? I have a feeling it would taste something like Painkiller.

After playing a version of the game that wasn't an alpha or beta or anything, according to the readme, I can say I was pretty impressed with the game’s current progress. It already captured the same feeling that Serious Sam did, and that feeling is that of DOOM.

I explored three beautifully designed levels and decimated hordes of monsters with two different weapons (more on those later). The levels were clean with great looking textures and layout, and they were big. Large open spaces both inside and outside and no noticeable loading times. These expansive areas serve as a good place for you to fight gigantic bosses that shake the foundations with their footsteps and throw boulders at you the size of Volkswagens. I can't wait to see this game at 1280x1024 with all the eye candy turned on... drool I say.

The two weapons I got to play with were rather cool. The first one was a machinegun pistol of sorts that fired in bursts. The other weapon was of the chaingun type with a continuous feed of bullets. Both weapons also had an alternate fire mode that consisted of a projectile, grenade and rocket respectively, packed with stuff designed to better show off the nifty physics engine of Painkiller. Check out some of the screenshots to see what I mean, and keep an eye out for this one folks, its Serious Sam after a year at the gym.
