We recently had a chance to check out Hunter: The Reckoning Wayward for the PS2, the Smash TV-esque action-shooter continuation to the original Hunter: The Reckoning on the Xbox. While the game is still in pre-alpha form, we were able to get a good idea of what to expect from Wayward when it is released later this August. Hunter: The Reckoning Wayward picks up only two years after the events of the first game. The original four Hunters are called upon by a mysterious character who reveals that evil still lurks in the shady town of Ashcroft. Being that Wayward begins only shortly after the conclusion of the Xbox game, the majority of environments and enemies will be quite similar. But High Voltage Software has included a host of new additions to that game that should whet the appetite of zombie-slayers everywhere.
One of the most exciting new additions to Wayward will be the introduction of a between-level hub system called Hunter Headquarters. Here you’ll be able to review game hints that have been picked up in previous levels, view trophies that have been awarded to you through completing various optional objectives, visit an entertainment center that allows the player to watch cinematic cut-scenes, view character models, or listen to licensed music from the game, and view the objectives of each mission. Instead of the straightforward, do-or-die mission objectives of the Xbox game, your objectives will now be split into three distinct categories: required, optional, and hidden. Word is still out on whether completing the optional and hidden objectives will reveal unlockable goodies or not. Wayward will sport an entirely new story with new areas to explore and blow up zombies in, but many areas will also be familiar to anyone who has played the original Xbox game since Wayward also takes place in Ashcroft. Visually, the four main characters will be touched up a bit, exuding a bit more flair this time around. A new unlockable “psychotic” playable character is said to be included in Wayward, though very little information has been released regarding the unique abilities of this mysterious character. The Xbox version was hampered by occasional camera issues where the player would be caught behind an object or building, but Vivendi has heard the cries of disgruntled gamers and implemented a transparency system for any objects between the camera and the on-screen character. Three new enemy classes will make an appearance in Wayward: the boojum, the aileron, and the mourner. For those keeping track, that brings the roster of monsters in Wayward to just over 20, not too shabby. The boojum is a snake-like creature with teeth, the aileron is a smallish flying creature that tends to travel in packs, and the mourner is an ectoplasmic ghoul that will momentarily stun your character should one of their flying green knifes hit you. PlayStation 2 exclusive bosses will be included in Wayward’s new areas, and some new weapons will also be incorporated, though the flare gun that sets monsters on fire is the only one we know of for sure. Fans of the original Hunter: The Reckoning may want to give this game a look when it is released later this August, as Wayward is shaping up to be quite an interesting continuation. Those who haven’t had the chance to check out the original, either on the Xbox or GameCub,e can consider Wayward their chance to enjoy the visceral hardcore action of the White Wolf inspired series. More information will be released on Hunter: The Reckoning Wayward as E3 approaches so stay tuned for up-to-date announcements in the coming weeks.
