Ever since EA Sports Big dropped SSX into the eager laps of PS2 owners everywhere, developers have been scrambling to find the next big “extreme” sport. The now-classic formula of large, massive tracks with hidden shortcuts, over-the-top tricks and jumps, and riders with no concern for bodily injury has been used for everything from snowmobiles to dirtbikes. Yet so far, a majority of these titles have been rather terrestrial. Sony aims to break that tradition with their extreme aquatic sports title, Jet X2O.

One look at the intro movie of X2O and you’ll notice how SSX’s flavor has infused this title. You’ll be able to choose between 8 different international characters, each featuring their own individual quirks and personalities. These qualities also define the stats of each rider. For example, Taylor Jordan, the laidback surf rat from Detroit, is awesome at pulling off tricks, while Vittorio Calabria has a need for speed. Obviously, a rider is only part of the equation in a jet skiing game, so ten different watercraft are available to burn up waterways.

The press demo I played was a rather limited build, but it did provide a good sense of what the final title will be like. There will be three kinds of modes for games: Single Event, which will provide you with a quick race experience, World Tour, which will run you through a full season of races, and Big Wave, which is either a race where you pull off tons of tricks or a practice arena. Additionally, each race has specific conditions that you can place upon each race. Trick mode means that whoever pulls off the most tricks within a track will win that race, while Race mode is the usual “cross the finish line first” race. Of course, the most interesting mode is Combo mode, which takes the number of points earned from tricks and the place you crossed the finish line to determine who won the race.

The tracks you’ll find yourself speeding through can be summed up in one word: massive. With multiple waterways, you’ll find that you’ll spend at least three minutes navigating your way through half of each level. This doesn’t include ramps or shortcuts, which can bring even the slowest rider to the head of the pack with a well-timed maneuver. When you race down the course, you’ll have to keep an eye out for rogue waves and the wakes of other riders, both of which can affect the speed and control of your craft. Also, as you speed along, you’ll notice multicolored gates placed along the way. Ranging from light green to bright red, passing through each gate will earn you turbo boosts. Similarly, successfully completing tricks will increase your turbo meter that you can use to increase your speed, augment your tricks, or, if you’ve gathered enough, pull off your rider’s signature move.

Graphically, X2O delivers beautiful arenas packed with details. For example, Slicstream, an arena set in and around a hydroelectric power plant, not only features beautiful forest settings, but also displays impressive details for the power plant, its gates and its power outputs. You can literally detect the shift between upstream and downstream motion as you wind your way through each level. Plus, the water within X2O is some of the clearest, most realistic water you’ve ever seen. It splashes, sprays and rolls naturally, making it seem as though you’re really interacting with the environment as you’re challenging your opponents for position. Musically, X2O features a fast-paced, hard driving techno soundtrack; however, you’ll probably find yourself paying more attention to the comments made by each character and the announcers. Full of wry statements, smack talking and reactionary remarks, X2O’s sound is practically a character in its own right. Those of you looking forward to hitting the surf won’t have to wait for long, since X2O sprays its way onto shelves on Tuesday. Look for us diving into a review here soon!
