As you might have guessed from its name, Castle Strike, from developer Related Designs, is a real-time strategy game involving castles. As opposed to a game like Stronghold, where your goal was largely to build and defend your castle, Castle Strike is more of a typical real-time strategy game where you attack and defend equally.

The genesis of a castle. Starting with a solitary keep, add troop-producing buildings, walls, ramparts and towers, and then hope your defenses are solid enough to withstand enemy attacks!

The heart of Castle Strike is the castle. Your “base” in the game consists of a castle and an outlying town. That is, while some buildings (like the barracks) can appear inside the castle walls, other buildings (like farms) can only appear outside. That means you can’t just hole up in your castle; you have to maintain an active, mobile military to defend your lands and skirmish against the enemy’s lands.

Castle Strike is at least somewhat historically based. You can train monk units to heal your soldiers in the battlefield, but you won’t see any wizards or dragons. The units are more your typical medieval variety, with axemen, bowmen, pikemen and more. If you build a stable, then you can mount your units to make them more effective, and there is also a variety of siege weapons to play with.

Some random shots of the world of Castle Strike..

From what I’ve seen of Castle Strike, it might be just a little too vanilla and a little too familiar to compete with the likes of Age of Mythology and Warcraft III. But the game looks good and runs smoothly, and Related Designs put a lot of effort into the interface (among other things, there’s a very friendly way to control your serfs so you can avoid micromanaging them), and so Castle Strike might find its niche in the real-time strategy genre.

Look for Castle Strike to appear in stores starting next week.
