Just like in the last game I previewed, Syberia II, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Dark Motives doesn’t stray very far from the first game in the series. The set-up is identical -- once again you lead the Las Vegas CSI team through five cases -- and even though I wasn’t given a manual for the preview copy of the game I received, the manual from the first game worked well enough (all of one investigative tool changed).
Gil Grissom, Catherine Willows, and Greg Sanders are just a few of the familiar faces you’ll see. Grissom is even sporting the beard he’s wearing this season. If the original CSI game had a flaw, it’s even though it was very polished, it was rather short and easy. Since it didn’t try to be an adventure, there weren’t any puzzles, and so you had to be content to run an interactive version of the television show if you were to enjoy the game. Dark Motives looks like it’s going to be at least a little more difficult. There are settings that can make it more challenging to find clues or interview suspects, and there seems to be more work involved in analyzing evidence now (as an example, you might have to combine objects). Compare fingerprints, analyze evidence, and more. The first case involves a motorcycle accident on a stunt show. As a nice change of pace, the driver doesn’t die, and so instead of working a murder angle, you have to figure out what caused the accident and who might have wanted it to happen. Was it the producer hoping for higher ratings? Or the stunt coordinator showing the stuntman who’s boss? Other cases involve the unusual murder of a homeless man, a body found at a construction site, an actress killed on stage, and the theft of a komodo dragon. Motorcycle stunts are dangerous. Just ask this guy. Look for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Dark Motives to hit store shelves starting March 23.
