Revenge, betrayal, destiny and freedom. No, I’m not talking about the extremely shortened summary for a new soap opera, I’m setting the stage for Eidos’ Legacy of Kain series. When the first title was released on the PlayStation seven years ago, gamers were introduced to a classic anti-hero in Kain, a prince of Nosgoth whose death and resurrection as a vampire lead him on a quest of revenge. Cutting a bloody path through the land, Kain succeeded in exacting retribution on his enemies. The offshoot of the series, Soul Reaver, managed to turn the hunter into the hunted, with Kain’s progeny, Raziel, seeking his own vengeance against his sire for his attempted murder. The settling of scores isn’t the sole motivation for Kain and Raziel; betrayal and manipulation by outside forces seemed to plague both characters in the material and spiritual worlds. Well, the latest chapter in the series, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, sees both heroes struggling to free themselves from the shackles of fate and their tormentors. Fans of the series will be pleased to know that the brainteasing puzzles have returned, but there’s much more impaling and reaver-swinging in this title than previous ones. We’re going to take a quick look at both heroes in a two part extended preview, as we explore the realm of Nosgoth and Defiance’s twisted plotline. Yesterday we took a peek at Kain, now we’ll take a look at his progeny, Raziel. While not as old as Kain, Raziel’s story is no less convoluted or tied into destiny and revenge as his sire’s.
Unholy Betrayal After destroying the Pillars of Nosgoth and essentially making himself a god of the realm, Kain spent time hunting down the Sarafan and Moebius, who’d manipulated Kain to serve his own twisted goals. To help him in this chase, and further insult his enemies, Kain raided the tombs of the greatest Sarafan heroes and resurrected them as his vampiric lieutenants. Granting them power and abilities in return for their absolute loyalty, Kain allowed his soldiers to have free reign with one limitation: No vampire could acquire a new ability until Kain had attained it first. This rule remained unbroken until one day, Raziel, evolved into a new vampiric form with large wings. Furious, Kain manually ripped the wings from Raziel’s body and commanded the other lieutenants to cast him into the Lake of Lost Souls. With immersion in water similar to being doused by acid, this fate was worse than death for Raziel.
Mentally aware during his entire plummet, Raziel suffered in unspeakable agony until he reached the bottom of the lake. Before succumbing to darkness, he heard a voice in his head offering him a chance at redemption. Choosing to accept the mysterious bargain, Raziel was reborn as the Soul Reaver by a being known as the Elder God. The Elder God had an ancient connection to Nosgoth, one which had been disrupted by Kain’s destruction of the world. Needing an agent to rectify the disturbance to his power, he contacted Raziel to wreak havoc upon Kain. More of a spirit than a vampire, Raziel discovered that he could devour the souls of the enemies he killed, providing him with energy or new abilities. Tracking down and slaughtering his brethren, he finally came into conflict with his sire at the Pillars of Nosgoth, who attempted to murder Raziel with the Soul Reaver However, the blade shattered upon impact, causing Raziel no harm. Kain, intrigued by this, enticed Raziel to one of Moebius’ time devices and flung him back into Nosgoth’s past. Trapped in history, Raziel discovered a surprising number of facts about his origin: he was actually predestined to be the hero of the original Vampire race, and the Soul Reaver was forged solely for Raziel’s use. He also found out that he’d slaughtered the human Sarafan lieutenants, including himself, thereby creating the conditions for his extreme transformation. Worse, he tragically found that his hunger for souls damned him to eventually be consumed by the Soul Reaver itself, forever becoming a part of the weapon. Feeling betrayed and manipulated by both Kain and the Elder God, Raziel fought with all his might to free himself from the God’s control and settle his score with Kain. Defiance picks up Raziel’s story with the wraith trying to escape the spiritual realm of the Elder God. Finding himself taunted by the bemused god, Raziel runs through the ghostly world looking for portals to Nosgoth. Functionally similar in most ways to Kain, Raziel can project force bolts and use telekinesis to assault enemies, and can be chained together to unleash wicked combos (although he’ll typically use his mental abilities to manipulate the numerous puzzles in the spirit world from a distance.) Raziel will also acquire new attack moves through battles, which can be unleashed via a number of button and directional presses. After vanquishing an opponent, either by impaling them on his blade or battering them into submission, Raziel can quickly boost his energy by swallowing their soul, increasing the power of his weapon. Raziel will also need to augment the spiritual version of the Soul Reaver to solve a number of puzzles, boosting its abilities with the elements or supernatural fonts scattered throughout the two dimensions. Physical barriers have never really been a problem for Raziel, considering that he exists on two planes: his physical form would simply phase through bars and other weaker barriers, solidly reforming on the other side. Shorter walls or fences can be leapt over thanks to Raziel’s tattered wings, which give him limited flight. Of course, if an impassible obstacle gets in his way, Raziel could simply shift from the physical to the ghostly world and vice versa. So there’s the sneak peek at both “heroes” of Legacy of Kain: Defiance. I’m sure you can tell by the screenshots that this is going to be an impressive title that won’t disappoint any fans of the series in any way.
