Hidden & Dangerous was one of the most frustrating titles of 1999,
possibly second only to Ultima IX: Ascension. It sat on the cusp of
greatness until it's many intolerable bugs were revealed one by
one. As we await the hopefully bug-free sequel from Illusion
Softworks, an expansion pack has been made available. Hidden &
Dangerous: Devil's Bridge offers a number of additions to the
original title such as new missions, weapons and vehicles, yet the
same old bugs seem to rear their ugly head in what could have
been a saving grace for the original title.
Devil's Bridge is based on the British Special Air Services, an elite
group of soldiers that were gathered and formed in 1941 and were
considered one of most powerful Special Forces agencies in the
world. Only the strongest, swiftest, and most daring were accepted
to join the SAS. Here's your chance to become a member of that
elite force in Devil's Bridge.
Devil's Bridge allows you to guide your 4-man squad of covert
paratroopers through 9 new missions spread across 3 new
campaigns. The missions revolve around, you guessed it, a bridge
that must be destroyed. The scenarios themselves are mammoth in
size, at least two or three times the size of the original, but many
of the missions seem uninspiring. The only decent campaign is the
second which features the power of a German tank. There are
several maps where you get to mount a vehicle (a jeep to be
exact) that includes a mounted gun, but the problem with such
maps is that you can't leave your vehicle behind because if the
enemy destroys your jeep, it's back to square one. You basically
have to take the jeep with you wherever you go, unless you're
prepared to keep one of your men behind to guard the jeep,
assuming he can fend off a half dozen enemy soldiers.
Speaking of enemy soldiers, most of Devil's Bridge takes place
after World War II, so it's Greek partisans you'll be battling. No
Nazi soldiers for you, next! Not only are the Nazis absent from most
of this expansion pack, the Greek partisans are just as ignorant as
the original Nazis were. That's right, the AI is none improved. As
seen in the original title, enemies continue to run around in the
open for easy target practice. They don't seem to know the
concept of taking cover let alone laying prone on the ground. Most
of the enemy soldiers are trigger activated again, so if you can plot
out the missions well, you can take out most enemy troops without
them knowing you were even there. If you don't plot it out, well
let's just say you'll be using that save game function a lot.
Other problems continue to present in Hidden & Dangerous: Devil's
Bridge such as clipping problems, objects sinking into the ground,
the ability to see through solid objects and the coup de gras, the
inexplicable deaths. Have you ever been running through a snowy
field, only to be teleported into the frosty river where one drowns
seconds later? How can you NOT fix this problem? Finally, saving
games still poses problems since there continues to be only one
slot to save your game in.
One of the few bright spots in Devil's Bridge is the improved
graphics. The textures seem to be much improved. Environments
are extremely detailed and there are some incredible weather and
other miscellaneous effects in the game such as falling snow in the
Ardennes forest and Greek sunsets. Unfortunately, there's a downside
to the improved visuals. Loading times are extended and there are
moments of choppy gameplay.
If you were hoping Devil's Bridge would improve on the number of
bugs found in the original Hidden & Dangerous, I'm afraid you'll be
disappointed. As an expansion pack, Devil's Bridge has the
quantity but the quality is completely lacking. It fails to deliver a
bug-free gaming experience and remains far too unstable. I guess
we'll have to wait for Hidden & Dangerous 2 and hope by then
they'll have worked everything out.
