Soccer again :) Nice. Lemme tell ya all about this title from
SEGA. WWS98 is the so-called "second chapter" of World Wide
Soccer, new features were added and there's some gfx
improvements that we'll talk about later in this review. Let's
start it then, shall we? :)
Graphics: 17/25
The GFX are totally different from the previous version of
WWS; there's some good points and bad points. Good points
first: the players gfx are a lot better, it looks like you are
playing Virtua Fighter -- the style is the same when we get
some close-ups. The pitching gfx are fine, crowd, stadium, all
with the support of D3D, so I didn't test the software version. I
see that Sega started supporting D3D when they released the
game and not after with patches. One good thing of the D3D
from Sega is that I can play it on my P133 with smooth and
nice GFX.
Sound: 10/20
Oh well, the sound is maybe the bad part from this game, Sega
sfx were never the best. The sound we have is ok but it could
be better. We have the typical sounds in the menus and the
typical voice when we start the game. No new features here!
Gameplay: 19/25
The gameplay changed a bit; you have 4 cameras and 3 type
of close-ups. The normal camera angle can be very bad since
you are too close to the ball -- I changed mine to FAR. The
game is easy to play in normal mode but it can get nasty if you
change to more difficult modes. The game is fully playable in
my jurassic P133 with my Monster3D. Sometimes, just
sometimes you can get some slowness but only when the
keeper shoots it. One good thing in this game is that you can
customize the keyboard, not like Fifa where you have to play
with their chosen keys. I didn't expect more from Sega, not
good in PC titles but very good in their own domain, the
consoles.
Fun Factor: 10/15
Fun, where's the fun :) ? Heh, well you can get some fun when
you start playing it but after some hours you'll just delete the
game and re-install World Cup 98 (c) EA or World League
Soccer (c) Eidos, the two best soccer games out there! You
have Exhibition, Sudden Death, World Wide Cup, Sega PC Cup
and Multiplayer modes to chose. All the world teams are here
but the names of the players are not real, so it's not that good.
Snow, rain, normal, day and night are some other features are
in this game. You can save the replays and show them later to
your friends. All the normal touches are here, tackling,
dribbling, bicycle kick, etc.
Multiplayer Play: 5/5
5 points to Sega -- you can play the game over the net against
a friend, that's very, very, very cool. Get your friends and play it
maybe the fun factor increases a bit more if you play in the
Internet.
Overall Impression: 7/10
We can't say Sega failed on this title since it has some good
improvements but like I said before, it isn't the 5th marvel of
the world :) The game ends up with a total score of 68%, not
bad for a Sega game.
Overall Rating: 68/100
