Dreamcast Review: Virtua Tennis (c) Sega of America
- Jove
Tennis isn't exactly the most popular sport, but it seems as though Sega has managed to create an incredible game from an unpopular premise. Here's a little blurb from our review:
"First and foremost, let me begin this review by saying prior to playing Virtua Tennis I knew nothing of the sport nor cared to know anything about it. Despite my displeasure for the sport of tennis, this simple game has won me over. Currently Sega Sports has offered gamers only one solid sporting title, NFL 2K. With several less than stellar titles under their belt, Sega Sports finally has redeemed itself by giving Dreamcast owners something to brag about.

Dreamcast Review: World Series Baseball 2k1 (c) Sega of America
- Jove
Sega is well known for its sports titles, but the Dreamcast seems to be lacking in quality in the area. Does World Series Baseball 2k1 break the trend?
Here's a little blurb from our review:
"Sega has a history of creating great sports titles, and so I expected its Dreamcast lineup to follow this trend, but so far I have been quite disappointed with only NFL2k being of much merit. World Series 2k1 promised much, with a slogan stating that "if they can do it in the field you can do it in the game", but much to my chagrin this is a complete and utter lie. World Series 2k1 is by far the worst offering by Sega sports, and I wonder what the developers were thinking when they designed this title.

Dreamcast Review: Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (c) Capcom
- Jove
Two dimension fighters are seeing the end of their days, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for one more! is Capcom's latest worthy of the Dreamcast?
Here's a little blurb from our review:
"Being a long time fan of the PC platform, often toting it as superior to the console, it is interesting for me to get back into the console groove (the last systems I owned were the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo) with Sega's next-generation console, the Dreamcast. Now that I have had the chance to re-familiarize myself with the console libido I realized that I have been missing out on some great games, namely arcade titles, that the PC just doesn't offer. Fighting games are one such offering, and as we approach the death of 2d in gaming, Capcom's Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is an excellent sendoff for 2d fighting.

Dreamcast Review: Worms Armageddon (c) Microprose
- Jove
A long standing PC favourite, Worms Armageddon has been ported over to our favourite console, the Dreamcast. Does the port succeed in capturing the quality of the PC original? Here's a little blurb from our review:
"Worms Armageddon is a port from the PC game of the same name, which is in turn based on a famous game known as Scorched Earth. The Worms series has long been a popular one on the PC and so the port to a console system was inevitable, and it so happens that Dreamcast owners are the lucky recipients. Worms Armageddon offers excellent gameplay for both single and multiple players with plenty of cute carnage to boot.

Review - Icewind Dale (c) Black Isle Studios - Jove [ GO! ]
Gamers' Choice Award: Icewind Dale (c) Black Isle Studios
- Jove
Released at the same time as Diablo 2, Icewind Dale, based on Baldur's Gate's Infinity Engine, promises in-depth hack n'
slash RPG gameplay. Is this the Diablo 2 we really wanted? Here's a little blurb from our review:
"Hot on the heels of the mega-release Diablo 2 is Icewind Dale, another RPG hack'N'slash extravaganza. The difference
however lies in depth, style, and character of Icewind as compared to its demonic brethren. Black Isle has refined the
original Baldur's Gate engine for use in Icewind dale, and while the engine is becoming slightly dated, the work that was
put into developing strong, balanced gameplay, and an excellent atmosphere has created a superb game, superior to both
Baldur's Gate and Diablo 2, as well as a decent candidate for game of the year.

Warzone Online Details
- Jimmy Clydesdale
Paradox Entertainment
has released new details from its forthcoming real-time strategic game, Warzone Online. The product will be based on the Warzone tabletop miniatures game and the Mutant Chronicles universe. Scheduled to appear on the PC and
next-generation consoles, it is set in a future where man has abandoned Earth in favor of other planets. Human nature being what it is, the
fighting is fiercer than ever, with mega-corporations battling over the scarce natural resources located on the new planets.
Gamers will command a force built on a point-per-unit scheme from a large selection of troops. Using this method, the participant's ability to
compose the right force for the mission at hand will affect the outcome more than the use of units, Paradox suggested in a fact sheet for the
game. For instance, fighting indoors will require competent close combat troops. Large-scale battles with limited cover will call for snipers and
units with solid ranged combat potential. If the battlefield presents a wide variety of combat situations, then people will need to choose a more
versatile force.
Warzone Online is being built on the Valpurgius 3D Engine, which is under development at Paradox Entertainment. A graphics rendering
engine designed for large outdoor environments and high detail landscapes, Valpurgius is being built around a scalable architecture that
balances visual caliber with frame rate based on the client machine's performance. This means the game promises to run well on low-end
machines while leveraging the processing power of faster PCs. Spatial sorting, path-finding, line-of-sight and world mechanics are also
included. The engine is being designed around the next version of Direct3D and supports hardware accelerated transform & lighting.
The client will ship with a number of basic units from each force; advanced units will be available for purchase online. The game will not require
fees and will be run online for free. Another title based on the Mutant Chronicles universe is also in pre-production at Paradox. Warzone
Online is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2001.

GO Review: Dark Reign 2 (c) Activision
- Jimmy Clydesdale
While the original Dark Reign was overshadowed by Total Annihilation, the sequel manages to make the leap into the realm
of 3D RTS... just in time to be overshadowed by a myriad of other new 3D RTS games. Here's a little blurb from our review:
"The action is played out on a fully 3D landscape with a flying camera similar to Ground Control or Earth 2150. The
difficulty in controlling the flying camera to let you get a good look at the action is no better or worse than in
those other games. The day advances through day to night over time, but the darkness in this game doesn't alter
the field of view of your units much. The main effect of darkness seems to be to reduce the output of your solar
power plants, but that's about it, and with just a little planning, it is never a problem. Weather likewise appears to
be just eye candy with no noticeable effect upon the play of the game."
Be sure to check out the rest of our Dark Reign 2 review including a futuristic tank full of visuals. Enjoy!

GO Review: Empire of the Ants (c) Microids
- Jimmy Clydesdale
Although the concept is relatively unique, the structure behind this real-time strategy title is as generic as they come.
Here's a little blurb from our review:
"Les fourmis, les fourmis! I know what you're thinking and let me stop you dead in your tracks. Microids' Empire of
the Ants is NOT about a post-apocalyptic world where giant ants rule the Earth, while we humans are forced to
become slaves to their each and every need. Hmm, excuse me for a moment while I visit the copyright office,
would ya?
?
Ok, Empire of the Ants is simply a real-time strategy game set in the present, focusing on the colonization of ants.
You play the role of the ant commander whose duty it is to oversee the expansion and advancement of the
colony. Essentially, despite the relatively unique concept itself, Empire of the Ants is your typical strategy game,
mixing resource management and exploration with warfare."
Be sure to check out the rest of our Empire of the Ants review including a anthill full of visuals. Enjoy!
