further information: "One of these days I'm going to get around to writing an email to ID to let them know about this little company called Creative Labs that makes sound cards. Seriously, c'mon guys, where's my EAX??? This had the single most disappointing aspect of Quake 3. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect support for the SBLive! from a top tier developer like ID. As with the decision to leave out Direct3D support, I have to ask WHY? Was the game rushed out for Christmas? Is this a political statement? Epic games didn't seem to have any trouble adding EAX support to UT. Bleh. Well I guess I will be resigned to playing with two of four speakers disabled." - DToxR

game type: Letdown
game of the year: Command & Conquer 2: Tiberian Sun
publisher: Electronic Arts
vote rating: 26%
further information: "First of all, the engine was improved. That being a good thing, it wasn?t done properly - the max resolution is still a mere 800x600, at which your graphics quality doesn?t necessarily increase - it just makes everything much smaller. Since that didn?t require too much work on the part of their graphics crew, I believe Westwood should?ve included higher-res options, for those with powerful PCs that can handle it. Moreover, units still seem to have about four frames of animation each, which results in somewhat jerky motion. The terrain, however, does look good, since voxel technology is used. Voxels also help in producing explosions, terrain deformations and weather effects, such as ion storms and meteor showers." - Pseudo Nim

THIRD
game type: Letdown
game of the year: Ultima IX: Ascension
publisher: Electronic Arts
vote rating: 16%
further information: "Ultima IX once again begins with the Avatar being summoned to the land of Britannia by Lord British. This time however, Lord British informs you that his people are shedding their belief in the eight virtues and are starting to lose faith in his rule. Above that, there are eight giant columns have appeared throughout the land. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to solve the mystery of the eight columns and bring peace back to Britannia. I found it interesting that the plot is somewhat the opposite of Ultima V, where after Lord British?s abduction, the self proclaimed king Blackthorne wanted the eight virtues upheld at all cost. Anyone who opposed this was banished or imprisoned. Yet another interesting parallel is that near the onset of your quest, you are accosted by a minion of, yes you guessed it, Blackthorne." - Lothian
